Project Proposal
Project topic: Advocating for increased GLTB rights at the federal level. The end-goal would be to have DOMA repealed, and have the federal government institute financial-award programs for states that legalize same-sex marriage. Further, it is hoped that anti-discrimination laws based on sexual orientation be implemented. This project will be implemented using a top-level public access domain (website).
i. My goal is to increase awareness and change public opinion among the electorate in order to increase GLTB rights in the United States. The project would hope to shift public opinion enough to increase the spotlight on GLTB rights in South Carolina such that there is more open discussion in SC about repealing DOMA, allowing same-sex marriage, and implementing anti-discrimination laws based on sexual orientation.
ii. My target audience is post-secondary level students in South Carolina. However, as the project is being implemented on the internet, anybody could theoretically be part of the audience. In order to directly target South Carolinian students, the website will appeal to student culture, and be geographically targeted.
iii. The project will be implemented using a top-level .com website. It will be designed using specific coding and design frameworks/techniques. It will likely use FLASH, a design medium that tends to appeal to youth audiences.
iv. Individuals will be targeted to visit the website through poster distribution on Clemson’s campus, and through social media advertisements (ie. Facebook).
v. Though the ultimate goal is to see massive policy change concerning GLTB rights, it is recognized that a website campaign will not accomplish this goal. However, what it does hope to accomplish is to increase public support for GLTB rights in South Carolina, which in the long-run aggregate, helps GLTB rights. Project success will be quantitatively judged by implementing a survey on the website, which will gauge audience opinion before visiting the website, and afterwards.
